Course Description

Public and private uses of art are multiple and various. In this module we will consider how the arts (visual art, architecture and music) have developed and been used in relation to Christian worship. Focusing on various dimensions of religious arts, questions will be posed for students to research, taking advantage of the wealth of historical and contemporary Christian art and architecture throughout Great Britain.

This module will be taught as a series of seminars, interspersed with field trips to visit churches, art galleries, museums and worship services. Students will be expected to complete assigned readings prior to each class, research set questions, attend all field trips and participate actively in classroom discussions and assignments.
